A couple of frugal Vermonters that were able to retire early and enjoy life.
We bought our 22' Airstream International AS brand new in 2002. As of 2020 we've towed "The Luv Sub" over 81,000 miles in our nineteen seasons of camping. Our channel will take you along on our travels, show you some "How To" videos based upon what we've learned, and highlight the fun and fellowship that comes with attending rallies with the Wally Byam Airstream Club. Occasionally, we'll throw in a random travel video or two as well as our "Cooking with Cindy" playlist.

Switching From Lead Acid to Lithium RV Battery | Will It Work For You?
In Luv Subbin Episode 281, we show you how to convert your RV from flooded lead acid batteries to Battleborn lithium batteries. We discuss the reasons why we chose lithium, why we did not chose AGM, and finally, why we went with Battleborn versus some other options. Then we get into the conversion itself. We show you how we changed over our converter, switched the lug nuts, and entered the new data into our Victron BMV. Finally, we finish with some infrared imaging of our battery set-up.

Carnival Conquest New Year's Cruise 2024! | Miami, Key West, & Cozumel
I found when making connections outside (35yrs in the electric utility business) after crimping the terminal on the wire to heat it and apply solder; that will help stopping the connection from corroding during inclement weather.
Thanks for watching and that's a great tip. I've not done that before but will check out some videos for the proper technique.
Congrats - welcome to the 21st century.
Thanks for watching! I went kicking and screaming but the 21st century is looking pretty good...
One option for you would be to build a "upper loft" for a 2nd battery. I have seen it done with the same "L-channel" steel that holds your current battery but has welded uprights and cross members for a 2nd battery above the current one to achieve the same footprint. Just a thought. Double your amps. ????
Thanks for watching! That's a great idea that I'll keep in my back pocket. Right now we're 3 days into our trip and have never been below 69% - even with hooking up Starlink off the inverter to upload this video...
Yikes what are y’all even doing out there 😂 can’t appreciate a good dirt road when you see one… lucky you made it that far lol.
Thanks for watching! As Vermonters, we're pretty used to dirt roads...
Great video- I just realized that somehow I got unsubscribed from your channel- I gotta keep an eye on that 🍻
Thanks for watching and we're glad you liked the video and re-subscribed. Sometimes UA-cam does that for no apparent reason...
We have two Lithionics batteries-also made in the U.S.A.
Thanks for watching! Somehow, Lithionics did not show up in my search for Made in USA batteries. Regardless, that's great that there are choices out there.
We have Battle Born lithium batteries, too.
Thanks for watching. So far so good on our boondocking test trip.
DC to DC : you wouldn’t need to depend on your extra solar panels to charge your battery. Just makes good sense to drive and charge. We would love to get it. 😊
Thanks Tina! My truck will still charge. I'll get some data for the video next week regarding how well it does.
OK for our AirStream🚐 #EscapePodWeHadToDrainOurBattleBornBatteries2TimesBeforeTheConverterWouldExceptThem. Look at you converter if you have a green light or blue light, you need a blue light
Thanks for watching! Very interesting - I'll check that (we're answering comments at a pizzeria so I don't have to hook up Starlink). I do know that it's charging to the lithium algorithm because I was watching the charge profile...
Congratulations on the conversion! The channel still needs AmpMan! The mission, should you accept it, is to determine how long the 75 amp Li battery can last while boondocking! The viewers want to know!
Thanks Mike! Many Superhero's come back later so we'll see. So far, we are doing great boondocking and probably could go on as long as our holding tanks don't need emptying...
Your logic was sound going with lithium. Look forward to hearing how it works out on the road. Glad Cindy can turn on lights now. 😊-Jim & Michelle
Thanks guys! Cindy has not been regulated once this trip! We even uploaded this video with Starlink and our inverter running.
I’m buying your arguments on DC2DC. It does pay off when you boondock from one state park to another on a rainy week. But… you already have your trusty Honda when this situation occurs. Question I had was around 7 pin connection. You now have two different chemistry in parallel with different resistances. To make the matter worse, your Battleborn can self protect and shut itself off at any time which could lead to alternators diode blowing up. Best solution would be to isolate your lithium from your truck. Can this be achieved by removing the 7 pin charging fuse from your F150? Is there a fuse in the Aistream for this? Am I completely off and worry too much? Thanks for your video. Thanks for your channel.
Thanks for watching and you have given me food for thought. My understanding (a very limited understanding) is that the truck is just sending a "dumb" charge back into the battery bank via the alternator. I do not think they are in parallel with the truck's AGM starter. Lithium requires a special charging algorithm to get the full benefit but a dumb or AGM charge won't hurt it - it just won't be fully charged. Still, I will continue to research so thanks.
Great video! I hate to ask, but ... what is a DC-to-DC charger?
Thanks for watching! Trucks do not send much charge through the 7 pin connector. If you have a massive battery bank, your truck will barely charge the bank during a typical tow day. Therefore, people install heavy duty dedicated cables right from the truck's alternator directly to the battery. This can provide the juice needed to charge a large bank or a very depleted bank.
Love my new DC/DC charger! This allows me to run fans and 12v fridge while we’re packing for a trip without dragging out the heavy 50a cable. We arrive at the campsite with full batteries.
Thanks for watching! Yes, especially for the folks with the 12V fridge a DC-DC charger makes sense. We're testing things as we speak to see if we need one.
Wait to see if you have the need and if you do then get the DC2DC charger. I'm sure that is your plan,
Thanks for watching! Yes, that's the plan. Hopefully it won't take 22 years to make such a decision!
Is it enough to turn off battery switch when working on the converter or does the battery need to be disconnected completely? Thx!
Thanks for watching! In my opinion, it is acceptable to turn off the battery disconnect before doing 12V electrical work. Whenever a switch is relied on to disconnect power, I would double check by checking the 12V terminals or, as a minimum, trying to turn on some lights to ensure the switch worked.
@@LuvSubbin Thanks! fellow VT-er here and apprecaite your mentioning campgrounds around the state other than the state parks, although I love the VSP's. Hope to "run into" you somewhere along the way.
The world needs Amp Man!!!
Thanks for watching! Amp Man is still around, just in a much more sedate temperament - I'm still using my eclipse glasses to align my portable solar panel perfectly.
Amp Man aligns the Sun to suit his solar panels!! Lol 🌞
I love that the first housing complex is a religious compound .. Havent spent much time in new mexico
Thanks for watching!
Dc to dc is a great way to leave the generator at home. Long trips will keep your battery charged as compared to the lower voltage/lower amperage in the 7 way charge pin. Awesome video👍
Thanks for watching! Yes, we're monitoring the situation closely. Hopefully the generator will only be needed for a little burst or air conditioning on a 100F day (we have an Easy Start).
@@LuvSubbin I ended up with the Renogy 60 amp and we throttled it in half to preserve the alternator. We typically travel 8 hours a day when we travel and we have the compressor refrigerator. My concern was rainy days(solar) and the batteries maintaining the refrigerator.👍
It's as easy as A-B-C. Anywhere But China! If it's not something we really need, we do without!
Congratulations on moving into the modern era! Awesome sauce! Safe travels
Thanks Cotton Tales! Boondocking as we speak at a Vermont State Park and it is performing wonderfully.
If you are going to back to back boondocking sites that don't allow generators then DC to DC charging is great. Otherwise, don't waist your time on it. I just installed one one my truck because we are leaving for a 3 month long trip where we will be doing some boondocking that don't allow generators and they are only an hour apart.
Thanks for watching! Yes, we going to get some real world experience before investing in a DC2DC system.
How about a blue eddy to help out
Thanks for watching! We're keeping an eye on the Jackery or Bluetti for the future. We can certainly see some uses.
No first agen
Thanks for watching! It's not always great to be first. I recently saw a quote from Stephen Wright - "The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese".
Well well well.😂😂😂😂
Thanks for watching! Yes, we have entered the modern world...
That's not worthless land at all. It's. Called being off grid if you wanna be out in the middle of nowhere. You make it. What you Wanted to be a nice homestead
Thanks for watching! It's not worthless (valued at $168 for two acres) but you would really want to be seriously off grid.
One of the first things I check is the battery water level. Also, a de-sulfating device can help restore the battery.
Thanks for watching! Good points - I always carry some distilled water with me to add as necessary. The de-sulfating is a good idea but I don't think my charger has one. Plus, at 5 1/2 years old it was about time...
You are so specific about going to the same certified CAT scale in PA each time, however you use a totally different scale (is it certified and tested too? It's just for charging for garage) to get the weight of the truck which of course is used in many of your calculations. Seems like doing a weight of the loaded truck on the same scale would be better. I'm sure if you go off hours you can find a place to easily drop the trailer and do a $4 reweigh. Most scales are available 24 hours a day. Most truckers are done by 8 or 9 pm.
Thanks for watching! You are correct in that I go a little overboard with the same scale. The reality is that we travel up and down I-81 at least four times per year and the Carlisle CAT Scale works out to be a prefect fuel stop for us. For the RV calculations, things don't have to be perfect from an engineering or scientific perspective so multiple CAT Scales or weigh scales will be sufficient to ensure your rig is safe...
@@LuvSubbin I forgot to say, nice video. Great content that many can use. My stop said they "had never been told of a exact limit between weight and reweigh". I just did a reweigh 24 hrs after my 1st one. They are designed for truckers and it can take a while to load out the truck with several small loads that might need to be weighed each phase of the load. Hope to start doing RVing again. It's been 50+ years. Don't think we can swing an Airstream.
Amazing RV battery story and tips
Thanks for watching and the super nice comment. Make sure to tune in next week as we convert our rig to lithium.
Great Video! This video got our rv refrigerator going again. Thank you
Thanks for watching - your comment totally made our evening! UA-cam can be a lot of work but we think that if we can help or entertain those in the RV community, it is worth it. Safe travels (with a nice cool fridge).
Do the barracks rooms get better as you go from freshmen to senior?
Thanks for watching! The rooms do not get better as one moves from a freshman to a senior (with the exception of the Battalion and Regimental Commanders and their XO's whom get really sweet, huge rooms). The major "perk" of being a senior (at least when I was there) was that seniors are allowed to arrange the furniture however they want. This usually means the instant disassembly of the bunk beds and segregating the desks so that one has more privacy when studying. I graduated in 1988 so another senior perk was having a TV. With modern cell phones and WiFi I'm not sure what the rules are now. Other 80's era room perks was that 2nd semester freshman were issued a telephone (no more phone booths to call mom and dad) and sophomores/juniors were allowed a radio. Times I'm sure have changed...
Great video! Looking forward to next week's video! Long Live Lithium!
Thanks Mike! It has been 22 years of lead acid so I can finally say that I have crossed over to the dark side.

Rich! Love the vid! Al Geiger told me to look it up!
Thanks Bill! I was texting back and forth with Geiger. I'm glad all you 88 guys like it. We can't wait to get back to the Palmetto State...
Great video guys, but wouldn't have been a lot faster to test the battery by simply taking it to your local auto parts store and have them check it almost immediately as to whether it could hold a charge or not? I'm looking forward to watching your next video regarding the change over to lithium batteries as we have a 2005 Classic with two lead-acid batteries and want know if it is really worth it. Best regards....
Thanks for watching! It might have been easier but I actually enjoy doing all of my own maintenance and troubleshooting. Plus, I am leery of taking my 5 1/2 year old battery to a place that sells batteries... As I have been a proponent of lead acid for 22 years, we hope to provide some good content on the conversion.
I am glad you are feeling better Rich! That stuff is no fun at all. Cindy you did great! My Cindy drives our 350 Dually often just for cases like this.
Thanks for watching and I am indeed feeling better. It's great that your Cindy can drive an F-350 dually. It's one of the reasons that we got the 150. My Cindy just felt entirely uncomfortable in the 250 (and our Airstream is pretty small). Safe travels!
@@LuvSubbin Thanks! I hope we see you on the road in the future. We will miss the next national rally, so it may be the next one. Take care!
Yeah! You went with lithium! Class is now in session and I am looking forward to learning from a battery engineer! See you at international!
Thanks for watching! Yes, we did go with lithium. Actually, we've been planning for this day since we replaced our converter 3 years ago. We made sure it could run both lead acid and lithium... We are also looking forward to Sedalia.
Tuned in to this video because ive studied narrow boats in England...had to stop the video you guys are annoying and gringe worthy
That's the best part of UA-cam - you can turn us off as soon as we become cringe worthy! I would suggest our English narrow boat series where we sailed the Avon Kennet Canal with Oxfordshire Narrow Boats but I would not want to stress you any further...
Great video and VERY informative. Question about the two fans you show; where did you get them?
Thanks for watching! The 12V fan is a "Hella Marine 2 Speed Turbo Fan". I got it from Defender Marine for $74.99. If at all possible, I try and buy stuff from boat and marine stores as I feel their standards and quality is higher. I couldn't find info on the green fan but it is battery powered and takes two D cells.
You guys are great! I love this stuff. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! We think it is a great product and enjoyed showing how it works and debunking a few myths.
I’d be game for some Luv Subbin rub!
Thanks! You never know how things might develop...
Thanks for this video!
Thanks for watching! We hope it helps. I have a 12.5' collapsible ladder that I take on the road with us. I've used it most recently to fix a broken Fantastic Fan lid.
Wish there were easy to understand videos like this one about all kinds of those new-fangdangled systems in the new RV's! Seeing how to use the multimeter and the converter/charger trick was great. I learnt quite a bit today!
Thanks so much for watching and the super nice comment. We're always glad when someone finds our videos useful or entertaining. Thankfully, our RV is a 2002 so we have very few of those new-fangdangled things.
Another great video....one of your best! Thanks....can't wait to hear about your lithium conversion. We love ours and have made great use of them!
Thanks so much for watching! The "How To" videos are never our favorites to make but we had fun with this one as it was happening as we filmed it. We really want to make the lithium one good...
Well! Wenlearned a trick or two! Thanks! And... I had never heard of not putting a battery on a cement floor!
Thanks Denise! Yes, I am an absolute fountain of useless battery knowledge. You've heard of AA and AAA. But did you know there are also B, E, and F cells? Now you do.
Thanks guys
Thanks for watching! We hope our video was useful from a problem solving perspective and that you'll join us next week for the big install.
Looking forward to next week’s video!
Thanks for watching! We hope to provide a lot of good information (and maybe a little entertainment) next week...
Please stop the beeping!! Ugghh! That is great information about the concrete floor, Jim really appreciated it! It's dead. 😵 We will wait with baited breath until the next video..... Michelle
Thanks guys - sorry for the beeping. It was much worse in person... We hope next week will be fun and maybe, just maybe, a little educational.
